NNR enters into a significant Bilateral Cooperation Agreement with BelV of Belgium aimed at strengthening nuclear safety regulation in South Africa.


On Tuesday 18 February 2020, the NNR CEO Dr Bismark Tyobeka signed a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement with BelV, the Technical Support Organisation (TSO) of the Belgian Federal Authority for Nuclear Safety (FANC). The Agreement was signed by Dr Tyobeka and his counterpart at BelV, Dr Michel Van Haesendonck in Vienna, Austria on the margins of the TSO Forum Meeting.

This agreement will be implemented through ongoing cooperation and collaboration between BelV and the NNR’s Centre for Nuclear Safety and Security and will immediately focus on areas of Long term Operation of Nuclear Power Plants, Nuclear Waste Management Safety, Research and Development as well as Inspections for Nuclear Power Plants amongst others. All of these are currently key regulatory priorities for the South African National Nuclear Regulator, emphasised Dr Tyobeka.
